Topology of the universe from COBE-DMR; a wavelet approach

چکیده
In this paper we pursue a new technique to search for evidence of a finite Universe, making use of a spherical mexican-hat wavelet decomposition of the microwave background fluctuations. Using the information provided by the wavelet coefficients at several scales we test whether compact orientable flat topologies are consistent with the COBE-DMR data. We consider topological sizes ranging from half to twice the horizon size. A scale-scale correlation test indicates that non-trivial topologies with appropriate topological sizes are as consistent with the COBE-DMR data as an infinite universe. Among the finite models the data seems to prefer a Universe which is about the size of the horizon for all but the hypertorus and the triple-twist torus. For the latter the wavelet technique does not seem a good discriminator of scales for the range of topological sizes considered here, while a hypertorus has a preferred size which is 80% of the horizon. This analysis allows us to find a best fit topological size for each model, although cosmic variance might limit our ability to distinguish some of the topologies.

The angular power spectrum Cl is extracted from the 4 year COBE DMR data with a 20◦ galactic cut, using the narrowest window functions possible. The average power in eight multipole bands is also computed, and plotted together with a compilation of power spectrum measurements from other experiments. The COBE results are found to be consistent with the n = 1 power spectrum with the normalization...
متن کاملTesting the Gaussianity of the COBE-DMR data with spherical wavelets
We investigate the Gaussianity of the 4-year COBE-DMR data (in HEALPix pixelisation) using an analysis based on spherical Haar wavelets. We use all the pixels lying outside the Galactic cut and compute the skewness, kurtosis and scale-scale correlation spectra for the wavelet coefficients at each scale. We also take into account the sensitivity of the method to the orientation of the input sign...
متن کاملDo wavelets really detect non-Gaussianity in the 4-year COBE data?
We investigate the detection of non-Gaussianity in the 4-year COBE data reported by Pando, Valls-Gabaud & Fang (1998), using a technique based on the discrete wavelet transform. Their analysis was performed on the two DMR faces centred on the North and South Galactic poles respectively, using the Daubechies 4 wavelet basis. We show that these results depend critically on the orientation of the ...
متن کاملConstraints on Compact Hyperbolic Spaces from COBE
The (large angle) COBE DMR data can be used to probe the global topology of our universe on scales comparable to and just beyond the present “horizon”. For compact topologies, the two main effects on the CMB are: [1] the breaking of statistical isotropy in characteristic patterns determined by the photon geodesic structure of the manifold and [2] an infrared cutoff in the power spectrum of pert...
متن کاملSe p 19 94 An Infrared Cutoff Revealed by the Two Years of COBE - DMR Observations of Cosmic Temperature Fluctuations
We show that a good fitting to the first two years of COBE-DMR observations of the two-point angular correlation function of CBR temperature is given by models with a non-zero infrared cutoff k min in the spectrum of the primordial density perturbations. If this cutoff comes from the finiteness of the universe, say, a topo-logical T3 model, we find k min ∼ (0.3 − 1.1)πH 0 /c with confidence lev...
